Gingerbread Cookies Recipe

Cook Time:
15 min
Level:
Easy
Serves:
48 (3-inch cookies)

Ingredients

Cookies:

  • 1/2 cup firmly packed brown sugar
  • 1/2 cup vegetable shortening
  • 1 cup corn syrup (light or dark)
  • 4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 1/2 teaspoons ground ginger
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons ground cinnamon
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon grated nutmeg
  • 1/4 teaspoon allspice
  • Royal Icing, recipe follows

Equipment:

  • Gingerbread women and men cookie cutters
  • Green, yellow, red, blue, and black food coloring
  • Small offset spatulas
  • Gold and silver dragees
  • Edible glitter
  • Colored sprinkles
  • Small paint brush
  • Pastry bags with couplers
  • Pastry tip sizes 1, 2, 3, 101, and 46
  • White and yellow nonpareils
  • White, yellow, red, and green sanding sugar
  • Multicolored mini-jawbreakers (about 1/4-inch round)
  • Piping gel

Directions

Make the Cookies: Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F.
Place the brown sugar, shortening, and corn syrup in a saucepan and heat on medium, stirring constantly until the shortening is melted.
Place all of the dry ingredients in a large bowl; then add the warm sugar mixture, stirring until all of the ingredients are well blended. The dough will appear crumbly but will hold together when rolled out.
Use the dough immediately, while it is still warm. If it starts to crumble, place it in a warm oven for 1 to 2 minutes until it softens a bit.
To make decorated cutout cookies; Roll out the dough to about 1/8-inch thick on a lightly floured surface. Cut out gingerbread women and men with cookie cutters. Place the cookies on foil-lined cookie sheets and bake until golden brown, about 10 to 15 minutes. Cool the cookies on racks before decorating.
To decorate, tint a recipe of royal icing to your desired colors. Keep the icing covered with a damp towel while you are working to prevent it from drying out. To cover a cookie with icing, thin some of the icing with a little water and spread it on the cookie with a knife or metal spatula. Leave some of the icing thick for piping borders or other designs, using the #2 tip. Add dragees, edible glitter, colored sprinkles, or other decorations to the wet icing. To attach candies to un-iced cookies, brush a thin layer of clear piping gel on the cookie with a small paintbrush and add decorations.
Royal icing is very versatile. It is pure white and dries very hard, so it is perfect for making flowers and bows and delicate piped work. It can be kept in an airtight container at room temperature for 2 weeks. You should stir the icing to restore its original consistency after storage, but do not rebeat. Royal icing does not work well in high humidity.
5 tablespoons meringue powder (found in cake decorating stores)
1/2 cup minus 2 tablespoons water
OR
2 egg whites*, at room temperature
1/2 teaspoon cream of tartar
2 teaspoons water
1 pound confectioners' sugar
Place all of the ingredients in the bowl of an electric mixer and beat slowly until they are all blended. Then beat at medium speed until the icing forms stiff peaks, about 5 minutes. Add more sugar if the icing is not stiff enough, or a few drops of water if it is too stiff. Use immediately or cover the bowl with a damp cloth to prevent drying when not in use. Allow at least 24 hours for royal icing decorations to dry, at room temperature.
Yield: 2 1/2 cups
Prep Time: 5 minutes
Ease of Preparation: Easy

Top Ten Nutritional Tips for Children

Top Ten Nutritional Tips for Children
 by: Jason Horsley

With video games, TV, computers, poor meal choices and the internet, children are facing a health crisis of their own. Children as a whole are less healthy than they used to be in times past. Diabetes--thought to be a mainly adult disease in the past has been on the rise among children. An obese child usually translates into an obese adult, which can lead to all sorts of health problems in the future, such as high blood pressure and an increased chance of suffering from a heart attack or stroke.

With this in mind, eFitness for Life has put together a top ten list of nutritional tips for children.

1. Set a good example and keep your child active. Children learn by example, and if their parent is healthy and active, chances are they are too. Make activity fun for your child, and enrol them in as many sporting activities as you can afford.

2. Make sure your child eats their breakfast. Breakfast really is the most important meal of the day. It will give them the fuel they need throughout the day. Make sure you guide them towards making healthy breakfast choices, such as oatmeal or whole grain cereals.

3. Keep your child hydrated, especially if its hot outside or they’re engaged in a sporting activity.

4. Make sure your child gets enough protein and carbohydrates in their diets. Foods that are good sources of protein and carbohydrates include fish, poultry, meat, cheese, milk, beans or legumes.

5. Provide healthy snacks after exercise. Instead of handing them a chocolate bar, hand them a piece of fruit instead.

6. Provide variety in their diet. If your child is eating the same things day after day, chances are that they’re missing out on some nutritional building blocks. Besides that, they will get bored with their diet. Instead, have them help you choose meals that are healthy for the entire family. This will help them make better choices in the future.

7. See a nutritionist. They can help a great deal when it comes to planning meals for you and your growing child.

8. Try to make home cooked meals as opposed to eating out. Fast food is generally not a good way to instil good eating habits in your child.

9. Throw out the soda and limit the juices. Soda is jam packed with calories and juices are typically full of sugars. Instead, give them water.

10. Teach your child about proper portion sizes. Most people eat way too much food at each meal, which contributes to massive weight gain in both adults and children.

Nutrition is important for both children and adults. Together you can make your house a healthier environment, where everyone can reap the benefits. Don’t allow poor nutrition and inactivity to ruin your child’s health. Together we can make a difference that will last a lifetime.

Teach Your Kids How to Bake Yummy Banana Bread!

Teach Your Kids How To Bake Yummy Banana Bread
 by: Mary Walsh

i

Baking is definitely one good way to bond with your children. They'll have fun stirring the yummy mixtures in your bowl (and putting their finger on it too so they can lick the leftover batter).

Admittedly, letting your children loose inside your kitchen with you could create a huge mess, but what's a little clutter and spill compared to a great experience that you will share with them? Not to mention if you end up baking delicious banana bread that you will share with your whole family.

The children will see how painstakingly you prepare the food that you serve them and they will appreciate the time and effort you spend in preparing their favorite treats. Plus, you could also teach your children how to take directions as you anticipate them of the succulent results that lie ahead.

Mashed up bananas give the bread its distinct light sweet flavor. It became a staple in American cookbooks, especially when baking powder and baking soda became immensely popular during the 1930s.

It was speculated that banana bread originated during the early 18th century. Because of the simplicity of the recipe, banana breads became more and more popular as time went by.

Indeed, there's nothing like smelling the aroma of sweet banana and cinnamon when you pull the bread out of the oven. The delightfully crisp crust, with its mouth-watering golden brown color, is absolutely one of the best in the world.

The quality of the bananas that you will choose in making the bread is a huge factor that contributes to the taste of the finished product.

Lots of people believe that the best bananas for the bread are the ones with flesh that already turned soft and skins that already turned brown. Normally, people would throw away these overripe bananas, but this can actually be used to create the perfect banana bread.

Here are the recipe ingredients that you will need for baking banana bread:

3-4 pieces of mashed up bananas
1.5 cups of flour
1/2 tsp of salt
2 eggs, slightly beaten
1 tsp of vanilla extract
1/4 cup of softened butter

Mix eggs, sugar, vanilla extract and butter together into your big bowl. Toss in mashed up bananas then stir well. Add in salt and flour to your bowl then stir them up until evenly blended. Be careful not to over-stir though.

Next, pour mixture into 2 well-greased loaf pans, making sure that it is evenly distributed. Now put the pans inside the oven and bake cake at around 350 deg. F for 45 mins. To check that the cake is ready, insert a clean toothpick at the center. If it comes out of your cake clean, then you can take it out of the oven.

Someone You Know Would Love Earning Income With Watkins
I’m building my Watkins business almost completely by referrals. And I’d sincerely appreciate any help you can give me.

We have a HUGE shortage of Watkins associates in every part of the U.S. and Canada. Our goal is to have enough active, part-time Watkins associates so that every family in North America is offered Watkins products at least every month or two. But, the most-recent statistics indicate we’re only reaching one family out of every 250. Vast numbers of people remember the quality of Watkins from years ago, but don’t know how to get the products today. Many people don’t know the company is still in business. And, there are entire generations who we’ve yet to introduce to the wonders of Watkins. So, I need your help in finding new associates.

Who comes to your mind as someone who’d like to earn income on a totally flexible schedule and with absolutely no required commitments?

And, don’t just limit your brainstorming only to people who are having deep financial challenges right now. Certainly, becoming a Watkins associate could help that kind of person, but some of our most-successful associates are people who are “doing alright, but just want a much brighter future.”

For example, do you know young parents who need more flexibility for their families? What about retirees who are fed up with living on a fixed income? Someone who’s making ends meet but could sure use a few extra dollars each month? Or, someone who’d love to develop a solid income as their own boss in the next several years, so they could escape from a job or career that has them burned out and frustrated?

Just mention to those people that they may want to think about joining my Watkins team. Full details about the business are on my website:

Tell them to visit www.tsginfo.com and enter my code AQ4496. Or, they can call me and I’ll mail them a free packet of information, with a catalog, product samples, and business details.

By the way, there’s a reason I feel so confident about helping people get started as Watkins associates. It’s because associates who join my team will, like me, be part of the Summit Group, which is a group of Watkins leaders that provides free training and support for members of their teams. There’s an extensive training website, a Message Board where associates can ask questions ‘round the clock, and much more. My informational website mentioned above was completely set up for me for free by the Summit Group. They even created the template for this newsletter so that even new associates can put forth a professional presence from their first day without having to become experts on lots of details first.

Watkins is a great business. I hope you’ll help your friends and relatives by sending them my way.

Sincerely,
Amy and Paul Quintana

What a Day!

I have to say, it is very hard to home school one teenage and one pre-teen with a one year old baby! The challenges are many. My one year old is climbing on the table when the boys are trying to do their studies, and if you try to move her, well, don't even try it bud, cause she is going to have a full tantrum! So I try to distract her, but she wants to be ON the table. And it's not good enough that she be in her chair at the table doing her "homeschooling work" NO, she wants to be ON the table. She just learned to climb up on the table, so this is very challenging, it looks like I"m going to have have the boys do their homework somewhere else.

Mondays are just hard anyway, with trying to get back in the routine of things after the weekend! And not to mention the last few days to get ready for the holidays! It is just too hectic and my head is spinning! Oh, well, just another life in the day of a mom!

The baby is THANKFULLY taking a nap, it's anyone's guess how long this will be! Sometimes she sleeps for a whole two hours, sometimes it is 20 minutes, but I'm enjoying it while it lasts. It let's me get  a few things done. Well, Hope your week goes really well and have a wonderful day! I'm going to try!

Welcome and Hello!

Welcome and Hello!
If you have found this blog, I thank you for stopping by! I just started this blog mainly to just put down my adventures in wife hood, mommy hood and home based business hood. I look forward to sharing stories from my life and welcoming stories from others as well. Our life is non stop at times and crazy, but it is our life and it is a good life. Like anyone's life, it is a life filled with the polarity of the human spirit. Good times as well as the bad, happy with the sad, joyful with mournful, exciting with the boring and all the ups and downs of life.

I'm a Mom of 3 boys ages, 13, 11 and 8 and one baby girl who is 13 months. I home school my two older boys and that has been a challenge this year, but it has been an exciting and insightful adventure this year. I work from home as well. I sell on Ebay, I have been doing this for two years now and things are going really well, I love to work with ebay! I have recently joined Watkins Products and I am really enjoying this new and exciting business adventure as well! It is going really great in a such a short amount of time, I am really impressed with the business. I have always loved the products and now I have decided, to at least join and receive my discount! And the business end is working out better than I expected as well.  To tell you the truth, I feel like Thomas Edison when it comes to home based businesses. Let's just say, I know hundreds of way of how NOT to do a home based business! I have tried everything through out the years and nothing has quite worked, until recently. I think it is a combination of things, the right business that fits you, a product/service you can really believe in, timing and just the right calling!

Well, I have been on the computer enough for the day, and hubby is waiting.
Hope you all have wonderful night and great weekend!
